BFH launches SAS courses

14.08.2025 Bern University of Applied Sciences BFH will accept applications for its new continuing education programmes, the Short Advanced Studies (SAS), from 18 August. The first SAS programmes begin in autumn 2025.

Key points at a glance

  • BFH’s Short Advanced Studies (SAS) are flexible, practice-oriented continuing education programmes worth 1 to 9 ECTS.
  • The certificates meet the standards of swissuniversities and can be credited to CAS, DAS or MAS degree programmes.
  • The modular structure promotes specific skills and supports lifelong learning.
  • The first SAS programmes are scheduled to begin in autumn 2025. Due to be continuously expanded, the offering complements existing specialist courses.

Short Advanced Studies, or SAS in short, are compact continuing education courses that seamlessly integrate into today’s work and learning environment. With the introduction of the new continuing education programmes, BFH is responding to the growing demand for shorter, flexible continuing education formats.

Both learners and employers increasingly value continuing education programmes that can be completed in an efficient and practical way, without compromising on academic standards. The SAS programmes are designed to meet these requirements and are validated by recognised certificates (microcredentials) that meet the guidelines of swissuniversities.

Modular and combinable

Microcredentials are specifically designed to promote skills and support future-oriented development in the professional world. “SAS programmes are ideal building blocks for lifelong learning,” says Martin Schopfer, Head of the Continuing Education Office, summarising the advantages of the new programmes.

SAS programmes are short format, academic continuing education courses. Participants are awarded up to 9 ECTS. They can start with a course on a specific topic and then gradually deepen their skills with other courses.

Many SAS can therefore also be credited to more extensive continuing education programmes such as CAS, DAS or even MAS and EMBAs.

What are SAS programmes?

Short Advanced Studies (SAS) are Bern University of Applied Sciences’ compact continuing education courses. Worth between 1 and 9 ECTS, they are aimed at learners and professionals who want to develop their skills in a targeted and practical way – flexibly, efficiently and with a recognised certificate.

BFH’s SAS programmes are designed to confirm the participants’ learning success in a clearly defined subject area and adhere to the quality standards of swissuniversities. The certificates are transferable and, depending on the courses content, can be credited to further continuing education programmes such as a CAS, a DAS or a MAS.

Catalogue under construction

The first participants will start their SAS at BFH in autumn 2025. Our SAS catalogue will continue to expand in the future. New compact continuing education courses will be implemented as SAS programmes and existing specialist courses will be adapted to the new standard.

The current catalogue of Short Advanced Studies (SAS) is listed with our specialist courses on this page.
