Beginning of the new academic year: BFH continues to grow and expands its offering

15.09.2025 Bern University of Applied Sciences BFH is welcoming an unprecedented number of students in the autumn semester, with around 8,000 commencing the new academic year. This represents a 2% increase compared to the previous year.

In total, just over 8,000 students are enrolled in the current academic year – approximately 2% more than in the previous year. Around three quarters of the students complete a bachelor’s degree, with the remainder completing a master’s degree. The number of new first-semester students has increased to just under 2500.

Benefits for society

“For the third consecutive year, we are experiencing growth in the number of new students. This shows that our university offers an attractive range of courses and knows how to provide practice-oriented solutions to the challenges faced by our society,” says Sebastian Wörwag, President of BFH. “In particular, practical and entrepreneurial skills are encouraged in our degree programmes, which is especially attractive for ambitious young students. BFH is a university for people who want to actively shape the future.”

Mastering social challenges

With its research and its education and continuing education programmes, BFH will continue to make an important contribution to providing up-to-date answers to social issues and challenges. As a result, three new degree programmes will be launched in the autumn semester 2026.

On the Bachelor in Landscape Architecture programme, students will collaborate with municipalities, cities, planning offices and citizens to develop creative and sustainable solutions for urban development in the face of new challenges such as heat waves, heavy rainfall, densely populated cities and new mobility needs in urban areas.

The Master in Digital Government programme will focus on how society deals with digital transformation. It will equip specialists and managers with the necessary knowledge and tools for the digital transformation of administration and public services. Furthermore, it will address topics such as resilience, demographic change and digitalisation.

Last but not least, there is an increasing demand for specialists who can support change processes in complex environments with comprehensive design competence. The Bachelor in Transformation Design programme has been developed to address this situation by specifically training designers who can approach transformation processes creatively and with a holistic view.

Through its applied-research projects and innovative education programmes, Bern University of Applied Sciences participates in the strategic thematic fields of Caring Society, Humane Digital Transformation and Sustainable Development.
