Research fields and range of services
We conduct research on the framework conditions and effects of collaboration and cooperation between various actors in healthcare. In addition, we assess the conditions and impact of successful leadership in the healthcare sector.
Our research activities focus on three distinct thematic fields: we focus on collaboration with patients and users of healthcare services, we conduct research on successful collaboration between different healthcare professions, and we examine the role of leadership in healthcare.

We strengthen collaboration with patients and users
Participatory healthcare – shaping research and practice together
Health services are most effective when they are geared towards people’s needs. This is why we systematically promote the participation of users of the healthcare system:
- Research with the persons affected: we examine the factors that contribute to successful participation and the added value it represents. We ensure that the empirical knowledge of the affected individuals is systematically and effectively integrated into the knowledge production process.
- Patient and public involvement and engagement (PPIE) in training and education: people who have experienced illness and their relatives contribute their knowledge to the training of healthcare professionals.
- Implementation with various stakeholders: we develop, implement and assess initiatives with the general public and stakeholders in clinical, outpatient and community-based care.

We strengthen collaboration between healthcare professions
Interprofessional collaboration – interfaces for better care
Healthcare services are provided by teams comprising professionals from various disciplines. Interprofessional collaboration is therefore essential for high-quality, efficient, safe and person-centred healthcare.
- Communication and collaboration structures: development and implementation of new care models for seamless interprofessional collaboration and person-centred care.
- Healthcare research: analysis of care structures, processes, deficits and inequalities in patient care and development of improvement strategies. Provision of scientific findings for health policy and health management.
- Intervention studies: study of innovative interprofessional care models and the factors conducive to effective interprofessional collaboration – from the patient level to the organisational level.
Educational research – targeted promotion of interprofessional skills
Person-centred and team-oriented and collaborative care begins during training. We develop and evaluate innovative teaching and learning units:
- Science-based interprofessional modules
- Training programmes to strengthen teamwork in the healthcare sector
- Integration of the perspectives of those affected into training
We strengthen collaboration as a leadership practice
Leadership in healthcare – shaping the future through strong leadership
Successful leadership is crucial for effectiveness and efficiency in healthcare. We promote leadership skills to establish sustainable innovations in healthcare:
- collaborative leadership / leadership of interprofessional teams with the objective of fostering collaboration based on efficiency and motivation between healthcare professionals in patient care.
- Change management and implementation research: strategies for the successful integration of innovative care and leadership concepts.
- Ethical and sustainable decision-making – for fair and sustainable healthcare.
Whether in research, teaching or practice – we develop science-based and practical concepts for successful collaborative healthcare.
