NBS for the Mitigation of Soil and Water-Related Hazards in Vietnam

Vietnam is highly vulnerable to natural disasters, exacerbated by climate change and population growth. Managing forests and land sustainably, such as through ecological engineering techniques, is crucial for mitigating future risks.

Situation

Soil and water-related hazards (SWHs), including landslides and floods, are increasing the last decades. However, the quantification of the effectiveness of these NBS requires better understanding from a scientific point of view for their efficient application at regional scale.

Approche

This project aims to improve the assessment of how land use changes and climate change impact SWHs across different regions of Vietnam and to smart target measures at regional scale in order to mitigate these hazards. The project will: 1) conduct a comprehensive review of the susceptibility of various regions to these hazards; 2) collect new data on root systems and soil properties in Vietnam, 3) integrate this data into adapted modeling approaches specifically designed for tropical conditions; and 4) apply these improved models to assess SWHs and to enable smarter targeting and implementation of NBS at regional scale in actual and future conditions.

Perspectives

The project's findings will contribute significantly to a better understanding and assessment of SWHs in Vietnam, leading to improved and targeted NBS for mitigating risks. This enhanced understanding is especially important given the ongoing and accelerating impacts of climate change. This improved risk management is not only fundamental for the sustainable development of Vietnam but also provides valuable lessons for other countries facing similar challenges.
