Student Health Management BFH

Since the start of the Covid pandemic, mental health problems have increased among young adults. This project investigates what Bern University of Applied Sciences can do to promote the mental health of students.

Factsheet

Situation

Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, mental health burdens among young adults have been increasing significantly. The Federal Statistical Office, as well as various higher education-specific surveys, indicate that the burden is particularly high among students. The present project aims to coordinate and strategically align efforts to improve mental health at the Bern University of Applied Sciences (BFH). In April 2025, a survey of BFH students was conducted, addressing the following three questions: How are BFH students faring? What are the study-related stress factors affecting BFH students? What is students' perception of existing measures and services offered by BFH?

Course of action

The Student Health Management project encompasses an evaluation of the status quo at BFH, as well as the provision of best practices and resources to promote a health-enhancing learning environment across the various departments of BFH.

Result

The project achieved the following outcomes: Provision of an overview of measures already in place across the departments, as well as the current state of mental health. Establishment of a central information page, "Healthy Through Your Studies", consolidating all mental health services available to students. Identification of potential strategic directions and key focus areas for a Student Health Management (SHM) programme at BFH. Concrete recommendations for action to promote students' mental health.

Looking ahead

The project outcomes provide the foundation for the development of a University Health Management framework at BFH, as well as concrete measures in the area of teaching.
