Situation

Despite prosperity, only 11% of the working population in Switzerland is actively engaged in the workplace, which is reflected in growing stress, exhaustion and burnout (Gallup, 2023). Empirically, strength-based leadership has been shown to be effective (Wang et al., 2023) in increasing work engagement, improving well-being, and promoting productivity and employer loyalty. In 2023, the Business School at BFH initiated a human resources development project in which the VIA strengths assessment is used in employee appraisals to identify and apply individual strengths. The aim is to develop a prototype for strengths-based leadership, tailored to the Swiss work context and knowledge workers.
