Local farmers in a study circle in Mozambique
Niassa is located in the far north of Mozambique; “Away,” say the Niassas themselves. We Effect (the international development organisation of the Swedish cooperative movement) collaborates with local farmers’ organisations in study circles to train the farmers. Improving harvests by around 20 percent can make the difference between hunger and constant anxiety and food security and peace of mind, it also means three meals a day and money for school uniforms and supplies. Our keynote speaker is Prof. Lorenzo Casaburi from the University of Zurich. Lorenzo is the UBS Foundation Associate Professor of Development Economics (with tenure) in the Department of Economics. At the Annual Event, he will present an overarching view of cooperatives, with a special focus on recent research on East African agricultural cooperatives, and their impact on resource allocation, market access and collective action among smallholder farmers.

The 50-minute panel discussion is moderated by Rupa Mukerji from Skat Consulting Ltd. The panellists are:

  • Robert Erhard – Nestlé
  • Smita Premchander – Sampark NGO
  • Annette Krauss – University of Zurich
  • Philipp Schallberger – Kaffeemacher

The three 90-minute workshop themes and leaders are:

  • W1: Navigating change: Climate change and technological transformation (Innovation). Led by Anja Niedworok (ETH Zurich) and Stefan Gfeller (HAFL)
  • W2: Rethinking tomorrow: Youth and cooperatives (Inclusion)
